Being tired of being sick and tired is about the decision to take ownership of your life or situation. In the game of basketball, you will be forced to change your attitude, game, and mindset to get to the top of your game and make the biggest impact!
Attitude is a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically reflected in a person's behavior. How are you handling your current situation or position that you’re in? My Junior at the University of Hawaii was an up-and-down roller coaster. Learning a new basketball system, learning new teammates, and adapting to a new environment was tough. I started every game in the first half of the season but struggled to put my game into this system. The system was not designed for guards who created and broke down the defense. The coaches wanted a much slower-paced game, which was the opposite way I played. I was moved to six man after the midpoint of the season. When this happened, I could have become bitter or angry, but I decided to stay positive and figure out how to keep helping my team succeed. I needed to watch more films and get in the gym more to work on the shots that the system produced. Looking at it through the lens of these coaches, I have run this same system for 20 years, and they aren’t going to change it for me, so I must adapt. Taking this attitude helped me to practice hard and do what I needed to do day in and day out.
Changing my game to make the greatest impact and the best of my situation was key. Not having the ball in my hands all the time was an adjustment. Coming off of screens and reading defenders was new. I wasn’t required to do this before being at UH. I learned how to do these things because of my attitude towards wanting to be a better player. I became a better catch shooter and learned how to read the defense better to score off cuts and screens, making me a more efficient player. Sometimes, the things that we want to resist doing are the things that will make us better and more valuable to ourselves and others. Don’t be afraid to change your game; we can benefit from growing it.
Mindset: a habitual or characteristic mental attitude that determines how you will interpret and respond to situations. Changing your mindset can be the toughest. It requires deconstructing old habits and thinking to move past where you used to be.
A simple change was telling myself that this happened for me and not to me. This allowed me to think about how this situation could help me and what new skills I needed to meet this new task in front of me. I could give myself grace as I learned the new skills until I could put them to use. A simple change in mindset can get you through the most challenging times.
Being tired of being sick should push you to change, not stop or quit. If you’re not getting the results or outcomes you want, you must look at your attitude and change your game and mindset.
