What’s a routine, and why do we need them? Routines are regular series of movements or similar things used in performance. They help us to become more efficient and productive in our daily lives. Routines are the building blocks of consistency. A basketball player who creates a routine wants to improve some area of their game.
Routines take the guesswork out of when and how we are going to get things. They allow us to hold ourselves accountable for our goals and work our plan to accomplish them. Once we get into our set routine, our minds and bodies will become more focused and organized.
Let’s take a warm-up for ball handling, for instance. Before every game, Steph Curry goes through a challenging ball-handling routine that sends a message to his mind and body that he is preparing for the game. This helps him get ready to perform at the elite level that he is expected to perform at night in and night out. Steph Curry is one of the best ball handlers in the world because of his consistent routine.
After games, you will find NBA players back in the weight room to help them prepare for their next day/game. Stretching to start the recovery process routinely lets the body know that it’s time to start cooling down. Some will even do light strength training to retain muscle or improve joint stability throughout the long NBA season. Adding small things to your routine will help you feel better and help you perform better.
