Point guards must have a relentless desire to win. Coaches want point guards who are extreme competitors. They know when it’s time to make a winning play that, they will come up with one.
Over the last year, I have studied Coach Sampson of the University of Houston and Coach Shaka Smart of the Marquette. At the center of their winning programs have been tough, tenacious, high-character point guards. Jamaal Shead finished his career at Houston as the second-winningest player in school history 120-18. His accomplishments are so many, but at the top of the list are defense, assists, and toughness. Kolek of Marquette University also tore up the college basketball scene last year, winning countless awards and being drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round. Neither of these players' measures (height, vertical, etc.) blows you out of the water. What can’t be denied is their relentless to win on both sides of the ball.
What are three things young point guards can do that help them win the hearts of their coaches?
Be relentless every day in practice. Push everyone around you to move, act, and think like winners.
Work smarter and Harder than everyone else. Being a sponge in film sessions, ask all the questions you have to understand precisely what you need to execute.
Set the tone on the defensive side of the ball. This will generate crazy amounts of energy that will consume the entire team. Your coach will love you for it.
