Holding Back

Holding back does not help you.

We are going to look at this from 2 perspectives. One is you trying to save yourself for something that you think is coming later. The second is because of the internal fear of not trusting yourself.

So many times I’ve seen players not give 110% because they think reserving that extra effort and energy is going to be needed for later. Here’s an example: say there’s a loose ball that has been tipped out, and instead of chasing it down, you watch it because you feel that you don’t have anything more to give. The other team gets the ball, scores, and your team loses. You’re thinking, "I’m going to get another chance", but you can’t get that possession or game back. Doing everything to the best of your ability all the time displays your character and communicates to others you are all in.

Nothing good comes from holding back. In lots of instances, the story we tell ourselves about the present or the future is often not true. Ex - The coach won’t play me because he/she already has his/her favorites. This type of stinking-thinking holds you back from giving everything or even trying. This is for sure a way to not achieve what you want and prove that fake story right. You’re probably saying, "What if I push past that story and give everything I have to make it happen, and then it doesn’t happen in this immediate moment?" Then you’ve proven to yourself that you’re capable and willing to do what you must do. This will yield a return on the things to come in your future.

The best thing to do is to just let go. Let go of holding back, l

et go of what if, and let go of fear! Think about what’s possible, think about the positive desired outcomes. Give everything you have to go get it!
