Point Guards are like air traffic controllers; if they don’t send out the correct information, there will be confusion and crashes. They are responsible for preparing for almost every situation and knowing how to get out of a jam when needed. They must understand and check the weather (coaches' and teammates' energy and attitude) before practice and games to ensure everyone is ready to take flight together. Good guards help teams win games and championships.
When you watch the best point guards in the world, like Jrew Holiday or Jalen Bronson, you see them constantly communicating with their teammates. Sometimes, it’s with their voice calling out a play or telling someone to move to the correct position. Other times, you will see them pointing or waving their hand, raising their eyebrows, or nodding to direct traffic. Being a signal caller takes a lot of courage and responsibility to make everything work together.
Checking the weather is essential. This often starts with good communication between the point guard and the head coach. This means understanding the coach's vision for the team and how they want it to play. Talking and doing film study with the coaches and on your own will give you a deeper understanding of executing the vision. Showing up prepared for practice and games is a great way to earn the respect of everyone in the locker room. Your teammates will trust and follow you when they know how much work you put in.
Winning never happens on game day. The best point guards know that it happens in fall ball, in the weight room, and by spending time building team chemistry. Conducting challenges in conditioning or strength training can bring teammates together. Creating opportunities for teammates to overcome adversity early is another great way to get players together.
These are things that the point guard must be aware of and able to navigate. It’s never easy to be the hardest worker and the most responsible, but this weight is synonymous with the title of point guard. Never shy away from these things if you want to be a point guard. Run towards these opportunities!
