Teams That Play the Best Together Usually Win

Over the past several weeks, I have been in talk with other coaches and former college and professional players. First off, most of them hate losing, are frustrated when playing with players who don’t have a basketball IQ, and who don’t value winning over stats.

We have repeatedly seen in the NBA, NCAA, and at the high school level that the teams that play for each other, buy into something bigger than themselves, and make the necessary sacrifices end up hoisting the trophy. This doesn’t mean that the other teams that reach that far are not worthy of winning, but you know for sure that what’s listed above has happened.

I have found that in many cases, the team's players really enjoy each other and believe in playing the right way. What often gets in the way is the outside noises: Noises like, "You need to get yours," "The coach doesn’t know what he’s doing," "You should be playing in front of so and so." These mindsets and attitudes are absolute team killers and bring about division among players. No team can win if it is divided.

Here are some things that players can do that will help them and their team win.

  1. Know your strengths and play to them.

  2. Learn your role or job and do it consistently.

  3. Hold yourself and your teammates accountable for the goals of the team.

  4. Do more than what’s required.

  5. Understand that when we win, you win!!!
